Classic Chicken Sandwich Complete Information

The KFC Classic Chicken Sandwich costs $5.29 and carries 590-670 cal. Four parts go into it: an Extra Crispy chicken breast filet, a toasted brioche bun, pickles, and mayo. The filet is why it works. KFC breads it in the same Extra Crispy coating that goes on its bucket chicken, so the crust is craggier than the smooth patty most chains use, and it shatters rather than gives. The mayo is plain rather than a signature sauce, which stops anything competing with the chicken. Next to a Spicy Chicken Sandwich at the same price, the Classic is the one where the seasoning comes through instead of hiding behind heat.

Two numbers matter. At 34g of protein it is the best protein per dollar on the Sandwiches & Wraps menu. At 1,260mg the sodium is 55% of a day's allowance in one sandwich, before fries. One of them is a full lunch for most people. The Classic Chicken Sandwich Combo adds a side and a drink for $8.89, and Cole Slaw at $2.99 does the same job as the pickles for longer.

KFC Classic Chicken Sandwich Recipe

KFC publishes what goes into the Classic Chicken Sandwich but never the quantities, so this is a home version built to match the taste rather than copy the factory process. The part that decides everything is the coating: it has to stay craggy after it comes out of the oil. Supermarket ingredients and one deep pan get you most of the way there, and at $5.29 a sandwich in a restaurant, a batch at home starts paying for itself somewhere around the third one.

Method

Tips

  • Rub brine into the flour before you coat anything. It is the single step that separates a KFC-style crust from a plain fried chicken one, and it takes 30 seconds.
  • Use a thermometer for the oil rather than guessing. At 340F the coating and the meat finish together; 30 degrees hotter and you get a dark crust over undercooked chicken.
  • Rest the coated pieces for the full 10 minutes. A dry coating flakes off in the pan and takes the seasoning with it.

Variations

  • For a spicy version, add 2 tsp cayenne to the coating and stir 1 tbsp of hot sauce into the mayo. That lands close to the Spicy Chicken Sandwich.
  • For something nearer the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich, whisk cayenne, brown sugar and a ladle of the frying oil into a paste and brush it over the filet the moment it leaves the pan.
  • Swap the breast for thigh. It costs you the neat round shape and gains you meat that forgives an extra minute in the oil.

Serve it with

  • Secret Recipe Fries and something cold, which is what the restaurant combo is anyway.
  • Cole slaw on the side. The acidity does the same job as the pickles and does it for longer.
  • A batch of four costs less per sandwich than $5.29 once you are feeding more than one person.

A home version of Classic Chicken Sandwich. It is our own recipe, not KFC's, and the Original Recipe blend stays a trade secret.

Classic Chicken Sandwich Questions

The Classic Chicken Sandwich is $5.29 at a typical US restaurant. KFC franchisees set their own prices, and across the restaurants we sample the same sandwich runs from $3.99 to $6.19, so your local figure will sit somewhere in that band. The combo adds a side and a drink for $8.89.

590-670 cal, with 34g of protein, 35g of fat and 49g of carbohydrate. The number people miss is sodium: 1,260mg, or 55% of the FDA daily value in one sandwich. You can build a full order and watch the totals move in the nutrition calculator.

The sauce, and nothing else. Both use the same Extra Crispy filet, the same brioche bun and the same pickles, and both cost $5.29. The Spicy Chicken Sandwich swaps the plain mayo for a spicy one. Calories land within a few of each other, so the choice is purely about heat.

KFC records gluten, wheat, eggs, soy, sesame and MSG as present. It leaves several other allergens unassessed rather than declared absent, which is not the same as saying the sandwich is free of them. Every KFC kitchen fries chicken in shared oil, so tell staff about any allergy when you order rather than relying on a page.

Almost. It was on the menu at 21 of the 22 restaurants we sampled, which is as close to nationwide as anything on the KFC menu gets. The one restaurant that did not list it is the reminder that a franchise can leave any item off.
